The Problem of Integration of Roma from Marginalised Roma Communities into the Majority Society in Slovakia
Bekárková, Klára Anna ; Krpálek, Pavel (advisor) ; Nová, Monika (referee)
This thesis is a case study focusing on field social workers in marginalized Roma communities in Slovakia, their work and target group. The aim of the thesis is to identify mechanisms to combat generational poverty among Roma in Slovakia. The research question is: "What tools do field social workers use to combat poverty among Roma from marginalized Roma communities (MRC) in Slovakia and what tools do they use with a similar target group abroad?" The qualitative research was carried out in the form of structured in-depth interviews with six fieldworkers working with Roma from the MRC in different regions of Slovakia. Three social workers were employed under non-profit organizations, three under a national project. Hypothesis 1: State support in the fight against poverty is insufficient, therefore the third sector helps to fight poverty. Hypothesis 2: Non-profit organisations have their own mechanisms that they use when working with clients to help them move out of generational poverty. Hypothesis 3: Roma are unable to integrate into mainstream society due to living in generational poverty, which is the same in different excluded communities around the world. The research was preceded by a theoretical part describing national projects and projects of non-profit organisations targeting people in...
How discriminatory is the housing market in Slovakia: experimental investigation.
Sacherová, Kristína ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Kopečná, Vědunka (referee)
Housing discrimination is a widespread, but markedly underrated issue that is associated with diverse treatment of applicants for real estate's sale or rent based on their affiliation to some minority in society. Although there have been many experiments and studies conducted to uncover and measure the presence of discrimination mostly for African Americans in the US and Arabs in several European countries, such extensive researches for the Europe's largest ethnic minority, Roma, are lacking. This thesis presents an Internet field experiment on discrimination of Roma in the Slovak housing market which uses matched-pair method and four fictitious male applicants to request for a flat or house showing based on an online advert. In total, 396 requests were sent from email addresses with specific names signalizing ethnicity of applicants and the response rate was examined. Data shows that the applicants with Roma-sounding email addresses are 8 to 9.5% less likely to get an invitation for a showing compared to the applicants with the Slovak sounding email addresses. My analysis also suggests that the highest level of discrimination is found in the districts with median Roma contribution (specifically from 3 to 11%). Considering all my findings, it can be eventually concluded that in the Slovak housing...
Approaches by the government and non-profit sector to provide education to the Roma in eastern Slovakia
Slováková, Petra ; Šotolová, Eva (advisor) ; Mlčková, Marie (referee)
The subject of this thesis is to describe the approach of the state and the non-profit sector to education of Romani children in Eastern Slovakia. The theoretical part is focused on the approach of state, from pre-school through elementary school. The second chapter is devoted to the concept of social disadvantages and definitions of children coming from this type of environment. It clarifies known concepts such as zero class, preparatory class, teacher assistant and a full-day educational system, related to primary education and pupils from socially disadvantaged environment. The practical part is specifically dedicated to a single non-profit organization working in eastern Slovakia, ETP Slovakia - Center for Sustainable Development, with a description of the organization and their projects. Qualitative research was conducted using semi-structured interviews. The aim of this thesis is to describe the activities of five staff members of the NGO ETP Slovakia, their preferred styles of work with children and to find out if they themselves see the benefits of non-profit organizations within the village Velka Ida. This thesis should be helpful for workers in the field of education of Roma and socially disadvantaged children, helping them to become familiar with the concepts and principles associated...

Is Jakub Kováč more employable than Gejza Žiga in the labor market in Eastern Slovakia?
Tóth, Michal ; Svoboda, Miroslav (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
This thesis explores discrimination of Gypsies in the labor market in Eastern Slovakia. Using the experimental method I observe the hypothesis about discrimination of this minority in the labor market. The experiment consists of sending fictitious resumes with typical Gypsy and typical Slovak names to job offers in various fields. The results show discrimination against Gypsy minority, when Slovak candidates received 57% more callbacks for an interview. The highest rate of discrimination was in the waitstaff jobs, where employees regulary come into the contact with customers. Using an econometric model I estimated, that the chances of a job candidate for an interview invitation are about 19% lower if his resume contains typical Gypsy name. Afterwards I sent a questionnaire examining attitudes and opinions of employers on discrimination against gypsies to 190 companies in Košice and Prešov Region. Of the 70 replies in 2 cases the company representative admitted, that Gypsy name in the resume disqualifies this applicant.
